Born in 1960 and pretty much raised in Miami – he attended Beach High - John doesn't consider himself a true southerner. “Miami in my opinion is not really a part of the South. Cracker, Florida, or Beaufort, South Carolina, that's the South.”
Chuckles were abound as John, now 49, shared some of his South Florida memories at the Miami Book Fair, but only for a moment. His tone and pensive aura made it evident that he has struggled immensely with the Hemingway name, his family's legacy and a painful past. “It's a very emotional experience for me to be here... I mean my mom was schizophrenic and my dad, well he wasn't your average doctor. He was a cross-dresser, bi-polar and manic depressive. When I was six, Greg was my Hemingway hero. When I was 12, I had a different look.”
